The history of Science Center Spectrum
From the beginnings to the present day
The origins of Science Center Spectrum go back more than a quarter of a century, to the year 1982. That was the year the wider public got its first opportunity to try out experiments specially developed for the future Museum of Transport and Technology (which had not yet opened). Visitors to the Friends of the Museum were able to gather direct experience with astonishing phenomena that form the basis for understanding scientific concepts. When the Museum of Transport and Technology opened in 1983 it already featured an experimentation department of its own, called Versuchsfeld. In 1990 Versuchsfeld moved into a building of its own next to the museum and was renamed Spectrum.
Please note
The Science Center Spectrum is closed for major renovation and modernization work from 5 Dezember 2011 until the end of 2012.
What does Spectrum have to do with Berlin’s Anhalter Goods Station?

The building the Science Center occupies today was once the east wing of the administration building at the bustling Anhalter Goods Station. Together with the west wing (now demolished) and a connecting building it formed the entrance to the goods station. The adjoining loading road south of Science Center Spectrum still gives a good impression of how busy freight traffic here was back then. Technoversum, the museum foundation’s biggest project for the future, will fill this expanse with a forward-thinking vision of the technology museum for tomorrow.
